Safe & Secure is key

Adult Learners need to feel safe and secure in their learning environment before learning can occur.  Educators around the world are furiously working around the clock to transform face-to-face education to digital platforms to minimise the disruption to both students and academic teams. To do this successfully my advice is to slow down, step back and approach digital learning with the same holistic approach as classroom delivery.

Reflect on the techniques you employ on the first day of term and ask yourself can you re-create this in a digital environment? Padlet is a fun platform for students to share ideas and collaborate. Why not start your first online delivery asking students to share something new with the group or do they have a "burning question" that can be discussed collaboratively. Communication promotes engagement and establishes a positive environment of social learning.

Be mindful, students need time to adapt as they transition to the world of digital education. Start small with achievable goals and create a positive and friendly environment to alleviate the stress and tension many students are currently experiencing, as we navigate COVID-19 together.
